GLOBAL RECYCLING DAY, MONDAY 18TH MARCH

So today is Global Recycling Day, a crucial day in which to focus on recycling and preserving our planet's resources and combating environmental degradation. As humanity grapples with the escalating demand for natural resources, the imperative to reduce waste, repurpose items, and restore the health of our planet becomes increasingly urgent.

Construction sites, notorious for generating a significant portion of waste, including concrete, plastic, metals, and glass, play a pivotal role in the recycling ecosystem. In the EU alone, construction waste contributes to a third of the total waste generated, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices within the industry. In the UK, the construction sector stands as the largest consumer of materials, producing an estimated  60 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste in  2016.

Despite the substantial volume of waste generated, the UK boasts an impressive  90% recovery rate of construction and demolition waste, with heavy materials like concrete, brick, and asphalt being commonly repurposed for road aggregates. However, challenges persist, with nearly 5 million tonnes of waste still ending up in landfills, underscoring the need for enhanced recycling efforts.

Plastic, a significant component of construction waste, presents a unique challenge due to its slow decomposition rate. While the construction industry heavily relies on plastic for its durability and versatility, efforts to recycle and repurpose plastic waste are crucial in aligning with the UK government's ambitious waste reduction targets.

The benefits of recycling construction materials extend beyond environmental considerations. By embracing recycled materials, the industry not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption but also unlocks cost-effective solutions. Innovative approaches, such as manufacturing road kerbs from recycled plastic, showcase the industry's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

As the construction sector navigates the post-pandemic landscape, the adoption of recycled materials not only aligns with environmental goals but also enhances customer perception, offering a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market. Embracing recycling in construction not only safeguards our planet's resources but also paves the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
